Afghan Hound is a hound that is one of the oldest dog breeds in
existence. Distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a
ring curl at the end, the breed acquired its unique features in the cold
mountains of Afghanistan. Its local name is Tāžī Spay or Sag-e Tāzī.
Other alternate names for this breed are Kuchi Hound, Tāzī, Balkh
Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound, Shalgar Hound, Kabul
Hound, Galanday Hound, or sometimes incorrectly African Hound.

The
Abruzzese Mastiff (also known as Mastino abruzzese or Pastore
abruzzese, or cane da Pecora) is
a breed related to, but distinct from the Maremmano-Abruzzese (Maremma
Sheepdogs) from the Italian region of the Abruzzi. The Mastino Abruzzese
represents the original Abruzzese strain and is characterized by its larger
size, some male dogs reportedly exceeding 100 kg (220 lbs) in size.
Some of these dogs have been successfully employed as livestock guardian dogs
in the United States and in Norway, where reportedly they were effective in
deterring predation by bears.
